The sequence mattered as much as the final margin. Keith Hill gave Berth Rovers an early lead, but Suthampton United levelled six minutes later and moved ahead through Serge Meijer before the match reached its first quarter-hour of calm, if not quite its first quarter-hour of certainty. The score stayed 2-1 until Jan Nielsen and Serge Meijer struck in the closing stages, giving the hosts a clear result without erasing the visitors’ share of the ball or their respectable shot accuracy. With equal corners and no cards for either side, the difference was chiefly in the finishing: Suthampton United turned its greater volume of shots into a 4-1 win, while Berth Rovers left a substantial portion of its expected return uncollected.
