The first half was the hinge of the match. Marden took the lead through Friedrich Unger, but Carwithes answered three minutes later through Nilson Pires and went ahead when Willi Schneider scored in the 37th minute. Three Carwithes bookings before the interval, against one for Marden, also made clear that the home side’s authority came with a certain willingness to leave a mark on the afternoon’s paperwork.

Marden stayed close enough in the shooting and xG figures to make the contest meaningful, but Carwithes had the greater attacking volume and ultimately the cleaner return. The visitors committed six fouls to Carwithes’ sixteen, while both sides won three corners; neither figure alone explains the result, but together they sketch a game where Carwithes were more active and Marden were not without threat. The late goal settled it without rewriting what had come before: Carwithes had built the lead, and Schneider supplied the closing punctuation.
