Fen 0 - 9 Elleoth Rangers

The xG figures were 0.11 for Fen and 4.01 for Elleoth Rangers, against actual returns of zero and nine. Fen produced only one shot, and none on target, so its modest estimate never became a serious threat on the scoreboard. The visitors, by contrast, scored more than twice their xG: 15 of their 17 attempts hit the target, and their finishing was exceptionally clinical. The gap between 4.01 expected goals and nine actual goals is substantial, but it came alongside a steady stream of accurate efforts rather than a solitary improbable strike.

The possession split—55 per cent for Fen, 45 for Elleoth Rangers—is an unusual footnote to a nine-goal defeat. Fen also won seven corners to the visitors’ one, while Elleoth Rangers made more tackles and committed more fouls. Those figures suggest the hosts had spells with the ball, but not the shots to turn them into danger; the visitors needed less of it and were far more decisive when they reached shooting positions. Four yellow cards for Elleoth Rangers added some untidiness to an otherwise ruthlessly productive performance.
